Vision plays a vital role in your baby’s early development, yet many vision problems can begin before any symptoms are noticeable. Because infants cannot verbalize what they see or do not see, it is important to detect potential issues as early as possible. That is why the InfantSEE® program was created: to provide comprehensive eye exams for infants at no cost, helping ensure your child’s eyes are developing properly from the very beginning.
InfantSEE® is a public health program developed by the American Optometric Association that offers a no-cost, comprehensive eye exam for infants between 6 and 12 months old. The goal of the program is to catch early signs of vision and eye health issues.
Many vision problems don’t show noticeable symptoms in infants, which means issues like poor eye coordination, refractive errors (such as farsightedness or astigmatism), or even more serious conditions like strabismus and amblyopia (lazy eye) can go undetected.
If left untreated, these issues can interfere with visual development and learning, potentially leading to long-term vision impairments.
An InfantSEE® exam allows an optometrist to:
Assess visual acuity and eye alignment
Detect risk factors for developmental eye issues
Evaluate overall eye health
Create a plan for early treatment or monitoring, if needed
The earlier a problem is identified, the more effectively it can be treated. For example, amblyopia is most responsive to treatment before the age of 5. Detecting it at 6-12 months can significantly increase the chances of restoring normal vision.
Additionally, early intervention helps ensure your child can meet developmental milestones and thrive in learning environments. Vision plays a foundational role in reading, motor coordination, and attention span - skills that begin to develop well before school age.
At Cincinnati Vision Group, we take a gentle and thorough approach to infant eye exams. Using lights, lenses, and age-appropriate techniques, we evaluate your baby’s eye movements, focus, and internal eye structures. The exam is quick, non-invasive, and tailored to your child’s comfort.
Your child’s vision lays the foundation for how they explore and understand the world. By scheduling an InfantSEE® exam during their first year, you’re taking an important step toward supporting their growth, development, and future success.
