Dry, burning, gritty, or irritated eyes can make work, screen time, driving, and everyday activities uncomfortable. While artificial tears may provide temporary relief, recurring dry eye symptoms can sometimes be connected to problems with the oil glands along the eyelids.
At Cincinnati Vision Group, we offer advanced dry eye treatment with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Radio Frequency (RF) technology. For patients in West Chester and Kenwood, these treatments can address underlying factors that contribute to evaporative dry eye rather than simply managing symptoms.
The meibomian glands produce oils that form an important part of your tear film. When these glands become blocked or do not work properly, tears can evaporate too quickly. This condition, known as meibomian gland dysfunction or MGD, is a common contributor to chronic dry eye.
Blepharitis, eyelid inflammation, environmental conditions, prolonged screen use, medications, and other health factors can also affect tear quality. Because dry eye can have several causes, we evaluate your eyes and eyelids before recommending treatment.
Common signs that may indicate a dry eye evaluation is needed include:
Intense Pulsed Light uses carefully controlled pulses of light around the eyelids. IPL can help reduce inflammation associated with meibomian gland dysfunction while improving the consistency of the oils produced by the glands.
Treatment may also help decrease factors associated with blepharitis, including Demodex mites. By improving gland function and reducing inflammation, IPL can support a healthier, more stable tear film.
For some West Chester and Kenwood patients, IPL may be considered when inflammation is playing a significant role in ongoing dry eye symptoms.
Radio Frequency approaches MGD differently. RF uses controlled thermal energy to gently warm the eyelid area and meibomian glands. This heat can soften thick or trapped oils, making it easier for the glands to release them into the tear film.
Improving oil flow can reduce tear evaporation and help restore a healthier tear film. RF treatment can also support circulation around the treatment area, making it another option for patients with evaporative dry eye caused by poorly functioning meibomian glands.
IPL and RF are not necessarily competing treatments. At Cincinnati Vision Group, our Envision by InMode technology allows us to use these advanced approaches to address different components of dry eye and MGD.
IPL primarily uses light energy to target inflammation and improve meibomian gland function, while RF uses controlled heat to loosen blocked oils and encourage healthier gland flow. Depending on your symptoms, eyelid health, tear quality, and the severity of your gland dysfunction, we may recommend one approach or incorporate both into a customized dry eye treatment plan.
The best way to determine which option is appropriate is through a dry eye evaluation that identifies what is contributing to your symptoms.
